Clay City —
Vernon Wendall Baughn, 96, of Clay City, went to be with the Lord on June 25, 2012, with his family by his side. Vernon was born on April 20, 1916, in Greene County, the son of Harley and Ina (Haywood) Baughn. Vernon was a graduate of Marco High School. Following high school, he was a united mine worker for Peabody Coal, where he retired from in 1982. Vernon married Eleanor Hale on June 9, 1937, and together they raised their family in Clay City. She preceded in him death in January of 1997.
In his free time, Vernon enjoyed hunting, gardening, farming, traveling, and nature. He also enjoyed wood working, where he would refinish furniture. Vernon took the most pride in his family, church, and work.
Vernon was an Elder, Bible class teacher, and active member of the Church of Christ in Clay City.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, Harley and Ina Baughn; wife, Eleanor Baughn; and sisters, Helen White and husband Marshall and Laura Ruth Vice.
He is survived by his four children, Terry Baughn, (remains missing from a hunting expedition in Colorado, October, 2011) and his wife Jean of Howard, Ohio, Karen Swearingen and husband Don of Clay City, Jim Baughn of Indianapolis, and Dave Baughn and wife Sue of Mobile, Ala.; 11 grandchildren, Jeff Baughn (Leah), Beth Baughn, Patsy Baughn, Susan Baughn, Gregg Swearingen (Jennifer), Jill Martz (Brad), Sam Baughn (Alisha), Matt Baughn (Kasey), Mary Warner (Jason), Shari Trackwell (Tim), and Ricky Cuevas (Carol); 17 great-grandchildren, Christian, Justin, Grace Leah, Dylan, Evan, Victoria, Caleb, Connor, Addison, Max, Jack, Sophia, Brittany, Ashley, Justin, Ashlie, and Donna; one great-great-grandson, Caden; brother-in-law, Gerald Vice of Indianapolis; as well as cousins and nieces; and extended family members.
Service will be Saturday, June 30, 2012, at 1 p.m. at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home, 301 E. Eighth St., in Clay City, with Brother Herb Woollard and Scott Wiley officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, June 29, 2012, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
