Deacon John Thurman Russell

TERRE HAUTE — Deacon John Thurman Russell, 100, of Lorain, Ohio, transitioned from Labor to Reward on Monday, June 4, 2012, in New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph. He was born on Dec. 23, 1911, and attended Pimento School System. After graduation, he moved to Terre Haute, Ind., and worked at Terre Haute Malleable as a furnace operator for 54 years. Then he met and married the love of his life, Marie Stewart-Russell, and remained married for 65 years. Deacon Russell was known for his gardening skills, he had one of the largest gardens in the neighborhood.

Deacon Russell enjoyed yard work, working on his automobiles, and finding carpentry projects around the house. He also was a mentor to his family members and others in the community.

He is survived by his son, David (Carolyn) Russell of Lubbock, Texas; daughters, Bonita Vereen of Lorain, who was the caregiver for her father, and Candace (Webster) Smith Sr. of Indianapolis; son-in-law, Edgar Davis of Gary, Ind.; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two cousins, Edna Whitfield of St. Louis and Lee Russell of Jonesburg, Ga.; devoted friend, Bradley Owens; adopted children, Deacon Walter (June) Gordon and Elder John (Mitzi) Lewis, both were caregivers from Terre Haute; and host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Russell; daughter, Sharon K. Davis; parents, Ollie and Gertrude Russell; and brother, Bartemus Russell.

Friends may call on Thursday, June 7, 2012, from 6 p.m. until time of service at 7 p.m. at The Cathedral Of Praise Church, 4545 Elyria Ave., in Lorain, where District Elder Melvin Brown, pastor will officiate services.

Homegoing services for Deacon Russell will be on Saturday, June 9, 2012, from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. at Bethlehem Temple Church, 1432 South 13th St.., in Terre Haute, where Elder Glenn Purnell is pastor.

At the request of family members, all contributions can be made to New Life Hospice of St. Joseph. Arrangements entrusted to Carter Funeral Home, 3001 Elyria Ave., in Lorain. Online condolences can be sent to:
