Ilagene “Genie” Dolores Kirchner McCammon

TERRE HAUTE — Ilagene “Genie” Dolores Kirchner McCammon, 87, of Terre Haute, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Jan. 30, 2012. She was born March 12, 1924, on the family farm in Clay County, to Lillian (Butt) and Charles Kirchner.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her older brothers and their wives, Glen (Ruby) Kirchner and Samuel (Martha) Kirchner; and brothers-in-law, Winston “Dude” Baker and Jack McCammon.

Ilagene graduated from Ashboro High School in 1942. She moved to Terre Haute and bought the Dairy Bar restaurant at 24th and Poplar at the brave age of 19 and became known to customers and friends as “Genie”.

She married the love of her life Edward “Bud” McCammon of Sullivan, Ind., in 1948. Over their lifetime together, she enjoyed listening to her Buddy singing with his brother Jack and later with his Barbershop Quartet friends. After retiring from the restaurant business, she worked for Columbia Records from 1967 to 1982. Her life was an example of living out the Prayer of St. Francis. She was a peacemaker, continually helping and encouraging others. She will always be remembered for her loving heart and serving hands.

She is survived by her husband; their two children, Brenda and Mark; her son-in-law, Dr. Bruce Tap; her beloved grandchildren, Bethany, Kathleen and Nathaniel Tap; her dear brother and sisters, William (Pat) Kirchner, Charlotte Baker and Nancy Selsam; and sisters-in-law, Patricia (Lynch) Kirchner and Norma (Minger) McCammon; as well as her many devoted and loving nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 6, 2012, in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th St., in Terre Haute, with the Reverend John Holwerda officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery near Brazil, Ind.  Visitation is scheduled from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012.
