John Unger Jr., 89, of Terre Haute, passed away at 1 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, in his residence. He was born in Vigo County, on Oct. 5, 1923, to John Patrick Unger and Alice Cottom Unger. He was an Army Air Corp veteran of World War II, and was a retired farmer. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Marcella June Rost Unger, who passed away in August of 2011.
He is survived by one son, David Unger and wife Sondra; one daughter, Linda England and husband Scott; five grandchildren, Lindsey Unger, Carlee Unger, Austin England, Blake England, and Lauren England; a brother-in-law, Neils Heramb; and several nieces and nephews. He also was preceded in death by one brother, William C. Unger; and one sister, Louise Jones.
He was a member of the R.E.M.C. Board for more than 25 years, Vigo County Fair Board, Vigo County Farm Bureau Co-Op, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972, and attended both Blackhawk Community Church and Oak Hill Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012, at DeBaun Springhill Chapel, with the Revs. Jeff Lee and Tim Fagg officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery, with military honors provided by VFW Post 972. Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, from 4 to 8 p.m. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, in his memory.
