TERRE HAUTE —
George Henry Gurchiek, 90, longtime Terre Haute resident, died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2012, in Vincennes. George was born Jan. 4 1922, in New Goshen, the eighth of 12 children of Bert and Elizabeth Markovitch Gurchiek.
He is survived by his children, Loretta Dorman of Jasper, Anne Murphy of Deerfield Beach, Fla., Jeff Gurchiek (Melissa) of Vincennes, and Bill (Peggy) of Fishers; three grandchildren, Jay Dorman (Stacey) of Terre Haute, Jennifer Pinizzotto (John and daughter Julia) of South Weymouth, Mass., and Chris Gurchiek of San Diego, as well as a large number of loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Judy Neimeyer Gurchiek, who died on Sept. 12, 2007; his parents; four sisters, Helen Stremlau, Josephine Schillaci, Mary Anderson, and Elizabeth Gurchiek; and seven brothers, Tom, Bert, Mike, Chuck, Tony, Ray, and Billie. He was a man of great faith and was devoted to his wife and his family.
Mr. Gurchiek worked at the Quaker Maid Company for close to 40 years, until it closed in early 1979. He spent the next seven years as a maintenance supervisor with the Vigo County School Corporation until his retirement in 1986.
George was a veteran of World War II, serving in US Army 10th Division, 27th Infantry, Battery C, New York National Guard. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart, Sharp Shooters Medal and the Bronze Star. He was an active member of St. Margaret Mary Church and a member of the American Legion Post 346, and local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972. He was an avid gardener, a master repairman; he loved to play cards and work puzzles, and in his youth to hunt with his brothers.
Visitation will be at Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave., in Terre Haute on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, from 4 to 8 p.m. with the Rosary said at 7 p.m. A funeral mass will be on Friday, Nov. 30, 2012, at 10 a.m. at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church with interment to follow at Calvary Cemetery. Following the burial, a luncheon will be held at the Community Center of St. Margaret Mary’ Church.
