  UPDATE 4: Deadly tornado roars through Oklahoma City suburb

  A monstrous tornado at least a half-mile wide roared through the Oklahoma City suburbs Monday, flattening entire neighborhoods and destroying an elementary school with a direct blow as children and teachers huddled against winds up to 200 mph. At least 51 people were killed, and officials said the death toll was expected to rise.

Richard T. Auer

CLINTON — Richard T. Auer, 86, of Clinton, passed away at 5:05 p.m. on Feb. 9, 2013, in Clinton Gardens. He was born May 22, 1926, to Arthur R. Auer and Hilda Berkhart Auer. He was a graduate of Indiana State University. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a retired school teacher at Woodrow Wilson.

He was a member of the Fairview Park Church of Christ, Clinton Public Library Board and a volunteer at the Union Hospitals in Clinton and Terre Haute. He married Janet Stewart on Dec. 26, 1954, in the Fairview Park Church of Christ.

He is preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Auer; a son, Brian Auer of Denver; a daughter, Susan and Brian Burton of Fishers; two grandchildren, Andrew Burton and Kelli Burton; three stepgrandchildren, Sydney, Summer and Dane; and two stepgreat-grandchildren, David and Joshua.

Visitation will be Thursday from noon until services at 2 p.m., at Frist Funeral Home, with Steve Douglas officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, in Terre Haute. Military honors will be performed by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
