Bradley Sylvester Owens Sr.

TERRE HAUTE — Bradley Sylvester Owens Sr., 100, of Terre Haute, passed away very peacefully Wednesday morning, Jan. 23, 2013, to be with the Lord. He was a devout Christian, member of Prince Hall #4 and Constantine Consistory #25.

He was born in Hopkinsville, Ky., on Nov. 12, 1912, to Mr. and Mrs. George and Helen Withers-Owens, who preceded him in death, as did his wife, Ruth Mae Underwood-Owens, who passed on June 12, 2000, after 65 years of marriage.

Mr. Owens married Ruth M. Underwood-Owens in June of 1935. Born to this union were three children, Bradley Sylvester Owens Jr., Carolyn Gergrude Owens-Smith (Norlan) and Wynona Ruth Owens-Batton, Ph.D. (Carl Jr.).

Bradley also was preceded in death by his two brothers, George Owens of Indianapolis, and Wallace Owens of Terre Haute; and two sisters, Iva Wilcox and Rosetta Hathcock, both of Terre Haute.

In addition to Bradley’s three children, he is survived by 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen VanCleave of Indianapolis, and Flossie Davis of Cleveland; sister-in-law, Charlotte Underwood of Indianapolis; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and a special nephew, T. Bradley Wilcox (Teddy).

Bradley was employed by Terre Haute Malleable and was a self-employed carpenter.

Viewing will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m. until services at 1 p.m. Saturday, at Highland Missionary Baptist Church, 2851 N. 131⁄2 St., with Pastor Jahavich Henderson officiating. Burial will be held in Underwood Cemetery, in Pimento. Russell Funeral Home was entrusted with arrangements.
