Ruth Scheidler, 91, of Terre Haute, passed away Tuesday, January 15, 2013, in Springhill Village. She was born April 4, 1921 in Muncie, Indiana, to Herbert Smith and Mina Whitehead Smith. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Hubert Anthony Scheidler.
Survivors include two daughters, Andrea Thompson and her husband Bill, and Jane Grimes, all of Terre Haute; two sons, Larry Scheidler and his wife Anne of Salem, South Carolina, and Tom Scheidler and his wife Lorrie of Terre Haute; 10 grandchildren, Jeff Raissle, David Raissle and his wife Wendy, Laura Carter and her husband Troy, Kristen Cole and her husband Brian, Gretchen Scheidler and her husband Ty Pittman, Laura Komar and her husband Jason, Lizzy Stark and her husband Matt, Jerome Scheidler and his wife Meg, Michael Scheidler and his wife Bridget, and Meagan Verhiley and her husband Patrick; 11 great grandchildren, Nolan and Parker Raissle, Dale and Abigail Carter, Cooper and Cassidy Cole, Kevin and Kate Komar, Audrey Stark, Nora Scheidler, and Erin Verhiley; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Robert L. Smith; and a son-in-law, Paul Grimes.
She was an active member of St. Benedict Catholic Church for 60 years, the Schulte Mothers Club, served on the Deanery Board of Education and volunteered for many years at Bethany House. She retired from Indiana State University in 1985 as an administrative assistant in Academic Affairs and the Artist Lecture and Convocation Series. Ruth graduated from Burris High School in Muncie and Ball State University.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, January 19, 2013, in St. Benedict Catholic Church, 111 South 9th Street, with Father Edmund Goldbach OFM. CONV. officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Friday, January 18, 2013, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the church and from 12 Noon to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, January 19, 2013 in Callahan and Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street.
