Myrtle Marie Thibodeaux Selge

TERRE HAUTE —

Myrtle Marie Thibodeaux Selge (also fondly known as “Thiby” by her friends and as Dee Dee by her family in Louisiana), 91, of Terre Haute, passed away peacefully at 4:30 a.m. Friday, June 22, 2012, at Plainfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

The third of five siblings, she was born Feb. 7, 1921, in New Iberia, La. to Eunice and Lionel Thibodeaux. Following high school, she enrolled in nurses training at Our Lady of the Lake School of Nursing at Baton Rouge, La. When the United States entered World War II, her younger brother Gégo joined the Army and she soon followed in his footsteps offering her services as a nurse in the U.S. Navy. It was at Portsmouth Naval Hospital, Virginia, where she met Navy Lieutenant Paul E. Selge of South Bend, Ind. While she waited on her orders to go overseas, she was notified that her brother Gégo was killed in action in the Pacific. She then was given the opportunity to transfer to the Naval Hospital in New Orleans to be closer to her family. Paul and Thiby were married in the Catholic Chapel at the New Orleans Hospital on Feb. 9, 1946. After discharge, Paul was hired to coach football at Indiana State Teachers College and the two relocated to Terre Haute, Ind. where they raised six children together. Thiby was a long time member of Saint Margaret Mary Roman Catholic Church in Terre Haute, and later a member of St. Benedict’s Church. She was dedicated to her family and her church. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Everyone will miss her beautiful smile and infectious laugh.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Paul E. Selge; son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Barbara Selge of Bursville, Minn.; son, Alan Selge of Plymouth, Ind.; son, Mark Selge of Indianapolis, Ind.; son and daughter-in-law Bob and Janice Selge of Avon, Ind.; and daughter, Debra Selge of Wolfe City, Texas. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Diane Spetter; grandson, Army Staff Sergeant Todd Selge; sister, Rowena Pellerin and brothers, Army Staff Sergeant Ellsworth (Gégo), Terrel, and Lionel (LJ) Thibodeaux.

Visitation will be on Monday June 25th, 2012 from 4 to 8 p.m. at DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Drive. Mass of Christian burial has been scheduled for Tuesday June 26th, 2012 at 12:05 p.m. in St. Benedict Catholic Church, 111 South Ninth St., with the Rev. Father Ed Goldbach officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Online condolences can be made at:
