SULLIVAN —  Michael D. “Mike” Doty, 67, of Sullivan, passed away Sunday, Sept. 30, 2012, at his residence after an extended illness. He was surrounded by his family.  The 1963 graduate of Franklin High School was born March 12, 1945, to Clay and Naomi Davis Doty, in Kokomo. He was a 1975 graduate of Indiana University and was the former owner and operator of Sullivan Rehabilitation and Sports P.T. Mike practiced physical therapy in Sullivan County for over 30 years and retired in 2007.  He thoroughly enjoyed his profession and his patients, which included many injured high school and college athletes from Sullivan and the surrounding area.

He was proud to have served in the United States Marine Corps and was a member of the American Legion and Marine Corps League. His professional memberships include the American Physical Therapy Association, McKenzie Institute, and American College of Sports Medicine. He also was a member of Sullivan First United Methodist Church and Sullivan Elks Lodge 911.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two older brothers. Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Susan Hartman Doty of Sullivan, whom he married June 28, 1975; one son, James M. Doty (wife Elizabeth) of Chicago; one daughter, Andrea Doty Cook (husband Phil) of Culver, Ind.; two granddaughters, Savana and Sophia Cook; in-laws, Jim and Nancy Hartman of Sullivan; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.    

He loved to talk sports and politics and was never hesitant to make new acquaintances or help someone in need. He was proud of his family and dearly loved his many friends and his loyal dog, Frank.

A memorial service and military rites by Sullivan, Shelburn and Hymera American Legions and Sullivan Veterans of Foreign Wars will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, at Holmes Memorial Chapel, in Sullivan, with the Revs. Eddie Hammond and Michael Brockway officiating. Visitation is 1:30 p.m. until time of services. A celebration of life will follow at 4 p.m. at the Sullivan Elks Club.
