Sister Marie Eleanor Shaw

TERRE HAUTE — Sister Marie Eleanor Shaw, 94, died at 4:41 a.m. on Aug. 27, 2010, Union Hospital in Terre Haute. She was born Feb. 27, 1916, in Chicago, to Harry John and Marie Elizabeth Damson Shaw, and was given the name Irene Marie. 

Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Aug. 22, 1933, and professed final vows Jan. 23, 1942. She earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, and a master’s degree from Indiana State University. In her 77 years as a Sister of Providence, Sister ministered in education for 51 years in schools in Indiana, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts and California. For 13 of these years, she served as principal. She taught at Annunciation in Brazil, in the 1936-37 academic year. Retiring from education, she gave volunteer service in Chicago for six more years. In 1993, she moved to the Motherhouse where she gave residential service until 2005, when she gave herself totally to the ministry of prayer. 

Sister is survived by nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by sisters, Harriet Shaw Krupa and Mary Ellen Shaw Bieschke; and brothers, Clifford and John Shaw. 

The wake is on Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, with the wake service at 4:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial is at 11 a.m. Thursday, in the church, with the Rev. Daniel R. Hopcus presiding. Burial is in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence. Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.
