Damita J. Flowers Ellington, 47, formerly of Terre Haute, passed away on Sunday, May 23, 2010, in Columbus, Ohio. She was born Nov. 30, 1963, in Japan, to James Flowers and Mary White Flowers. Damita had courageously battled cancer since 1998 and it was time for her to go home to the Lord.
Damita was a 1982 graduate of Terre Haute North and had worked for the Indiana Department of Corrections as a correctional officer. She was very family oriented and was a devoted mother, wife, sister and friend. She had a wonderful sense of humor and loved being the center of attention. Damita was adored by all of her family and she will be truly missed.
Damita was preceded in death by her parents; her father-in-law, the Rev. Oliver Ellington; and two brothers-in-law, Clarence Sandifer and Craig Hayes.
She is survived by her husband, Dwan T. Ellington; two sons, Rodney D. Johnson and his wife Kristy and Delancey T. Ellington; five stepchildren, Jamarr Ellington, Amber Rankin, D’wan Ellington, Na’Tasha Smith and Kieisha Ellington; three brothers, James Flowers Jr. and his wife Won, Kevin Flowers and his wife Cheryl and Randy Flowers; five sisters, Katrina Sandifer-Hayes, Karen Williams, Donna Rice and her husband Lawrence, Edith Flowers, and Oleta Jackson and her husband Darnelle; her mother-in-law, Grace L. Ellington; six brothers-in-law, Oliver Ellington, Venoit Ellington, Patrick Ellington, Bryant Ellington, Shawn Ellington, and Ian Ellington; two sisters-in-law; Linda Allen and Rhonda Ellington; 11 grandchildren, Christian Johnson, Noble Johnson, Baby Girl Johnson, Adora Rankin, Mandrake Rankin, Aka’hia Rankin, Rramaj Ellington, Jeray Rodocker, Honest Rodocker, Naka’hia Ellington and Jordan Ellington; very special aunt, Edith “Aunt T.T.” Jones; aunts, Geneva Harper and her husband James and Shirley Boone and her husband LeRoy; one uncle, Herman Flowers and his wife Patricia; nine nieces, Lilquenda Bivens and her husband Henry, Carla Sandifer, Katrina Sandifer and her husband Kyle, Chay’lon Hodge and her husband Nick, Monteka Flowers, Mary Flowers, Nichole Flowers, Stephanie Flowers and LaPree Lundy; and six nephews, Clarence Sandifer Jr. and his wife Kenya, James Flowers III, Miles Flowers and his wife Megan, Randy Flowers Jr., Tyler Flowers and Davarion Flowers. Damita also is survived by a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins; and many special friends especially Margie Smith.
Visitation will be Tuesday, June 1, 2010, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 North 13th Street. Private funeral services will be held with Bishop Mark H. Blade officiating.
