Mary Elizabeth Harrington Chalmers

Mary Chalmers peacefully died in Phoenix, on Sept. 22, 2012, at the age of 92, surrounded by her children.

Born in Evansville, Ind., on Nov. 21, 1919, to Edward and Seraphine Klein, Mary was one of six children. She lived in Terre Haute for many years with her first husband, Richard L. Harrington, who died in 1968, and later in New London, New Hampshire and Hendersonville, N.C., with her second husband, Gordon “Slim” Chalmers, formerly the Indiana State University Athletic Director, who died in 2001. She moved to Phoenix in 2011 where two of her children live.

Mary loved gardening and was well known for maintaining a beautiful yard and home wherever she lived. She spent thousands of hours in volunteer work in each community she inhabited, especially helping the hospitals and libraries of those communities. She was an avid and expert bridge player, very skilled at needlepoint, enjoyed golf in her younger years, and zealously followed University of Kansas sports, the alma mater of her husband and all of her children.

Mary is survived by her three living children, Rick Harrington and wife Suzan of Scottsdale, Ariz., Mary B. Harrington of Scottsdale, and Michele (Micki) Harrington and husband Steve Stitt of Fayetteville, Ark.; also by her deceased daughter, Linda Capstick’s son Eric Rei, and her husband Arnie Capstick, both of Maryland; also by Richard’s son, Jack Ronald Harrington and wife Lynn of Bluffton, S.C.; Gordon’s daughters, Margo Piercy and husband Joel, and Donna Cozzo of Utah; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; as well as three of her six siblings and many, many close friends.

Mary requested that there be no funeral, and instead that people remember her, if they wish, by sending a donation to Chalmers Scholarship Fund, Henderson County Family YMCA, 810 W. Sixth Ave., Hendersonville, N.C. 28739.
