Mary Ann (Rassel) Shagley

TERRE HAUTE — Mary Ann (Rassel) Shagley, 92, of Terre Haute, passed away peacefully in her sleep at Sycamore Manor on Sunday, July 15, 2012.  Mary Ann was born in Terre Haute, Indiana on December, 1, 1919 to Herman and Cecil (Benefield) Rassel.  She married Earl W. Shagley, Jr. on August 29, 1942 and he preceded her in death on July 3, 1986.

She was a devoted mother to her surviving five children, Earl W. Shagley III and his wife, Carren, Richard J. Shagley and his wife, Candace, Ann Sharp and her husband, Elliott Berger, Elizabeth Wolfe and her husband, Gary, and Sarah Lacey and her husband, Howard.  Mary Ann was blessed with 12 grandchildren, Jennifer Burden, Jessica Roine and her husband, Rubin, Elizabeth Shagley, Richard Shagley II and his wife, Alice, Emily Shagley, Katie Evans and her husband, Jason, Amy Sharp, Jennifer Allen, Sara Rohlfing, Suzanne Swain and her husband, Joe, William Lacey and his wife, Kelly, and Lora Lacey;  14 great-grandchildren, Gabriel Roine, Madeline Roine, Kathleen Hamblen, Seth Brown, George Shagley, Eleanor Shagley, William Shagley, Harriet Shagley, Lucas Evans, Ryan Allen, Drew Allen, Grady Swain, Ellie Lacey and Liam Swaim;  her brother, Herman Rassel, Jr. and his wife, Mary Catherine;  and many nieces and nephews.  She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Dorothy Cahill, Helen Kelly and Marjorie Prothero;  and a great-grandson, Henry Monroe Shagley.

Mary Ann attended St. Patrick’s grade school and high school and graduated with a business degree from Indiana State University.  She was a life-long member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, and belonged to the Sycamore Country Club, League of Terre Haute, Alpha Sorority and the Elks.

Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, July 18, 2012 in St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father Rick Ginther officiating.  Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.  Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, July 17th from 5:00-8:00 P.M. in St. Patrick Church.  Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th St.

The Shagley family would like to thank Hospice of the Wabash Valley for the wonderful care given to Mom through her illness and for the caring and support of all the staff at Sycamore Manor and her friends and relatives.  Mom felt so secure and loved in your hands.
