Robert E. Voll, 92, of Terre Haute, entered into Heaven Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012, on what would have been his 70th wedding anniversary, at Davis Gardens with his family by his side.
Robert was born on Jan. 21, 1920, to the late William M. and Essie (Monroe) Voll. He married Florine A. Lenges on Aug. 15, 1942, and they were lifelong residents of Terre Haute. He was a member of the CCC from March 1938 until March 1940. He served in the Army Air Corps from March 6, 1942, until Sept. 21, 1945, achieving the rank of staff sergeant. He served in the China-Burma-Indian theater and in the Tininie Islands. He earned six battle stars, one Distinguished Flying Cross and one Air Medal.
Robert was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church since 1940. He was a life member of the V.F.W. Post 972 and was active with Schulte High School from 1958 until 1974. Robert swam at the YMCA with the Senior Exercise Club from 1983 until 2004. Robert retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1983 after 27 years of service. He enjoyed dancing, fishing and going on bus trips. Robert will forever be remembered as a loving and devoted father and grandfather who constantly put others before himself.
He leaves to cherish his memory his eight children, Robert W. Voll and his wife Ruth of Terre Haute; Richard Voll and his wife Brenda of Jasper, Ind.; Edward Voll and his wife Miriam “Liz” of North Hollywood, Calif.; Mary Lou Voll of Terre Haute, Patrick Voll and his wife Cheryl of Seelyville; Mark Voll and his wife Nanette of Brownsburg, Ind.; Matthew Voll and his wife Janet of West Terre Haute, and Peter Voll of Terre Haute; 11 grandchildren: Kathy, Beth, Christine, Robert W. Jr., Mark Jr., Michael, Jamie, Brian, Michelle, Stephanie, Nick; and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Robert was welcomed home to heaven by his loving wife, Florine, who passed away in May of 2008; his brothers, Paul, Ralph, John and Byron Voll; and a granddaughter.
Visitation will be today, Aug. 19, 2012, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. with a 7:30 p.m. Rosary at Thomas Funeral Home, 2200 N. 13th St., in Terre Haute. Visitation will continue on Monday, Aug. 20, 2012, from 9 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will then be at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 2332 N. 13th St. The Rev. Fr. Rick Ginther will officiate with a committal service to follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. If friends so desire, memorial contributions may be directed to Sacred Heart of Jesus Church.
