MARTINSVILLE, Ill. — Joseph “Joe” Russell Lowry, 88, of Martinsville, passed away at 8:18 p.m. on Monday, June 18, 2012, at Carle Foundation Hospital, in Urbana, Ill. He was born Sept. 17, 1923, in Martinsville, the son of Clifford Bryan Lowry and Clara Mabel Blankenbeker Lowry. On May 25, 1946, he married Betty Lou Lamb in Missouri and she passed away on Feb. 11, 2004.

Survivors include daughters, Jean Elliott and husband John of Terre Haute, Ind., and Janet Lowry and companion Rick Brooks of Paris, Ill.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty Lowry; son, Randy Lowry; brother, Bob; and sisters, Claudia Edwards and Freda Carpenter.

Joe was a retired Illinois Department of Transportation employee, where he worked on road maintenance. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran and a member of the Martinsville American Legion. Joe was a member of the Martinsville Masonic Lodge and had previously served as past Grand Master. He was known for putting out a big garden, competing with his neighbors and friends.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. CDT on Thursday, June 21, 2012, at Greenwell Funeral Home, 30 N. Washington St., in Martinsville, with Brother Randy Black officiating. Burial will follow in City Cemetery, in Martinsville. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. on Thursday prior to services at the funeral home.
