Jay Buchanan McAleese

TERRE HAUTE — Jay Buchanan McAleese, 64, of Terre Haute, Indiana, passed away at Cannon Inn on November 7, 2012 of natural causes. He was born May 23, 1948 in Pittsburgh, PA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Karlotta Gass McAleese and George Buchanan McAleese. He graduated from Garfield High School in 1966 and Indiana State University. From being a manager at Baesler’s Grocery he went on to a successful career as an executive with McCormick Spice Corporation, Baltimore, MD.

Jay was a loving big brother and shared this love with his nieces and nephews on many wonderful visits and vacations. He was an accomplished epicurean and self proclaimed “foodie”. He used meals to bring together friends and family. He enjoyed scuba diving, downhill skiing, sailing and fishing.  He also loved Beau his chocolate Labrador retriever.

He is survived by brothers, George Andrew McAleese and wife, Anna Lee Chalos-McAleese of Terre Haute, IN, Karl John McAleese and wife Katie Riley McAleese of Columbus, IN, John James McAleese of Indianapolis, IN.; nieces and nephews, Myra Kay McAleese, Terre Haute, IN, Leslie Ann McAleese, San Jose, Costa Rica, Elizabeth McAleese Muszynski, Madison, WI and husband Michael Muszynski of Smyrna, GA, George William McAleese, Washington, D.C., Samuel Jay McAleese, Atlanta, GA.;  and former spouse, Mary Ellen Head Kearns.

Jay enjoyed class reunions with his high school classmates who remained true friends and showed him many kindnesses in his years in Terre Haute after his stroke. His life was also enriched through his friendship with Sharon Hathaway and her family.

A visitation will be 2 to 4 P.M. on Sunday, November 11, 2012, at Callahan Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th St. with services following at 4:00 P.M. in the funeral home, with Brett Wilson of Cross Lane Community Church conducting the eulogy. The family suggests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to a charity of their choice.
