Pearl E. “Toady” Loyd passed away Saturday evening, Nov. 3, 2012, while in nursing home care in Indianapolis. Mrs. Loyd, widow of Sedgwick B. Loyd, who was a life-long resident of Terre Haute, graduated from Wiley High School and attended Indiana State Teacher’s College, where she was a member of Tri Kappa Sorority. Mrs. Loyd was born March 1, 1924, in Paris, Ill., to Sarah Pearl (Hubbard) Terpinitz and Charles C. Terpinitz.

She is survived by four sons, Jonathan Kim Loyd of Fallston, Md., Sedgwick Bryant Loyd II of Calgary, Canada, Tracey Brent of Wichita, Kans., and Christopher Scott Loyd of Indianapolis; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She operated a private nursery school from 1956 to 1973. Shortly after her retirement from the nursery school business she founded The Briarpatch Restaurant and Herb Garden. After a local television station featured her garden and her knowledge of herbal legends, her reputation grew as a well-versed and in-demand speaker related to growing and cooking with herbs. And she produced several video publications regarding those talents.

Visitation will be Friday, Nov. 9, 2012, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., in St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, where Toady was a long-time member. A memorial service will then be at 1 p.m. Friday, in the church, with the Rev. Joseph H. Chillington officiating. Burial will be in Highland Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to St. Stephen’s, 215 N. 7th St., Terre Haute, IN 47807, in her memory.
