James D. McKinley

James D. McKinley, 76, of Terre Haute passed peacefully to Heaven on Friday, September 7, 2012 in his home surrounded by his family. He was born May 20, 1936 in Hardinsburg, IN to Clarence D. McKinley and Mary Wiseman McKinley.

Survivors include his wife, Sue E. Arnold McKinley; two sons, Robert A. Burton and his wife Kim and R. Vincent Burton; two grandchildren, Megan Burton and Elizabeth Burton; one sister, Sarah Lewis; several nieces and nephews; and his constant companions, his dogs, Millie and Muffin. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Dr. Joseph McKinley; and two sisters, Ruth Ann Braune and Betty Cripe.   

At the age of two, he moved to Delphi, IN where his father started the Union Bank & Trust. In 1958 James graduated from Wabash College where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. After college he served in the U.S. Army at the European Headquarters in Heidelberg, Germany. He then returned to Delphi where he worked at his father’s bank until 1966, when he became a bank examiner for the Department of Financial Institutions. In 1973 he moved to Clinton, IN where he was Senior Vice President and Cashier at the Citizens State Bank until his retirement in 1997. In 1983 he married Sue Arnold Burton and became a devoted father to her children. James was active in many organizations during his banking career including Junior Achievement, Boy Scouts of America (Order of the Arrow) and was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church North Campus. In retirement he enjoyed spending winters in Florida with his wife and dogs.    

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Monday, September 10, 2012 in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th Street with Pastor Rick Swan officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is scheduled from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 9, 2012. The family kindly requests that memorial contributions may be made to the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church North Campus, 1075 N. Fruitridge Ave., Terre Haute, IN  47804 or Hospice of the Wabash Valley, 400 8th Ave., Terre Haute, IN 47804.
