TERRE HAUTE —
David D. Sabaini, age 58, died in Terre Haute, on Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012, after a heroic battle with cancer. Born March 3, 1954, in Chicago, to Eunice Ingersoll Sabaini and Silvio Sabaini, David graduated from Illinois State University in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science in Communication, and in 1979 with a Master of Science in Communication. He began his career by managing student radio stations and teaching communication at Radford University in Virginia and Millikin University in Illinois. David began serving as Director of WISU-FM Radio and Instructor of Communication at Indiana State University in 1983. In recent years, he took great joy in founding SYCmedia Productions and serving as Director of Student Media at ISU.
David was a member of World Gospel Church, where he had served as an elder and Men’s Ministries leader, and had been active in Walk to Emmaus. As a sports official, he served with Wabash Valley Officials’ Association, Vigo County Youth Football, and the editorial board of Officials Quarterly, a publication of the National Federation of High School Associations; he also was a regular contributor to Referee Magazine and Beckett Sports Card Monthly. From 1987 to 1991 he was Sports Director for WPFR-FM radio.
David will be especially remembered for his humor, generosity, strength in battle and devotion to his family and his professions.
Survivors include his “current” wife of almost 35 years, Kathleen (Hansen); daughter, Angela and her husband John Hampton of Mattoon, Ill., and their children Kathryn, Claire and Lauryn; and son, Anthony and his wife Meghan (McQueeney) of Naperville, Ill., and their children Luca, Gianna and Carmine. David also leaves behind a sister, Silvia Sabaini of Asheville, N.C.; a brother, Bruce (Diane) Sabaini of Highland, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews, as well as hundreds of friends, colleagues and students whom he considered a part of his family. David was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Raymond; and a sister, Carolyn.
The family has entrusted Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave., with making arrangements. Cremation has been chosen. A memorial service will be held at World Gospel Church, 900 Gardendale Road, at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012. Honorary pallbearers are Bruce Sabaini, Anthony Sabaini, John Hampton, Mark Menich, Ben Menich, and John Zema.
To honor Dave’s legacy as a beloved communication instructor at Indiana State, the family has established an academic scholarship in his name, designed to offer tuition support annually for an ISU senior who is engaged in Multi-Media Studies. Contributions may be sent to the David Sabaini Scholarship Fund, ISU Foundation Office, 30 N. 5th Street, Terre Haute, IN 47809.
Thanks to Dr. Sang Yoon Huh and staff, and to David and Kathy’s many precious friends and family members for their prayers and support. Online condolences can be made at:
