Sister Jane Marie Osterholt, 68, died at 4:54 p.m. on Sept. 14, 2012, enroute from Union Hospital to Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was born on Sept. 3, 1944, in Celina, Ohio, to Walter and Luella Hartings Osterholt and was baptized Mary Jane.
Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Sept. 17, 1962, and professed Final Vows Sept. 16, 1973. She earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, a master’s degree in religious studies from Marygrove College in Detroit and a doctorate in ministry from St. Mary-of-the-Lake University in Mundelein, Ill. Of her 50 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered as teacher for eight years in Indianapolis and Logootee. She then began her many years in religious education, beginning in Loogootee and then serving in parishes in River Grove, Ill., and River Forest, Ill. Having earned her doctorate in ministry, she served for five years in leadership formation for the Diocese of Joliet, Ill., and then in 1996 began 10 years of service at Lisieux Pastoral Center in Kankakee, Ill. While serving there, she also was a consulting author with Harcourt religious publications and was a frequent speaker at conferences on catechetics. Sister’s focus in her catechetical work was the formation of children in their spiritual life. In 2006 she was elected to a five-year term in Congregation leadership. She then enjoyed a year of post-leadership sabbatical time.
Sister Jane Marie is survived by six sisters, Ruth Ann Proctor of Alachua, Fla., Audrey Woods of Sugar Land, Texas, Nancy A. Hessler of Payne, Ohio, and Karen Palmer, Theresa Dirig, and Agnes Osterholt-Polston, all of Fort Wayne.
The wake is Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Church of the Immaculate Conception with the wake service at 4:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial is at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012, with the Rev. Daniel R. Hopcus presiding. Burial is in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence. Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.
