A graveside memorial service for Norma Jane (Waugh) Shaw will be on Monday, Sept. 10, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Shepherds Cemetery, Shepardsville, Ind. Mrs. Shaw was born in Vermillion County, on March 1, 1922. She was the first child of the late John H. Waugh and Myrtle E. (Thomas) Waugh and grew up in Shepardsville. She graduated from Fayette High School in 1939.
On May 16, 1942, she married Robert B. Shaw of Brooklyn, N.Y., who predeceased her. After his military service in World War II, they settled in Terre Haute, where they raised their three daughters. Following Mr. Shaw’s retirement in 1977, the couple moved to Cazenovia, N.Y., where they became an active part of the community, volunteering for a number of organizations and enjoying their 19th century home and its surrounding woods and streams. In 2001, Mrs. Shaw moved to Asheville, N.C., where she lived until her death on January 14, 2012.
Throughout her life, Mrs. Shaw was known for her sewing and tailoring skills. From her daughters’ wardrobes, including prom dresses, wedding gowns and coats, to quilts for the homeless to pajamas for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, her sewing machine was always in use. During her teenage years, she played a piano accordion and entertained locally as part of an accordion duo. She was also a talented artist who exhibited her oil paintings and left many as a legacy for her family and friends. Baking, cooking and dancing were among her favorite activities.
She is survived by her children, Pamela Shaw Fellman and her husband Bruce of North Stonington, Conn., Connie Shaw Gundrum and her husband Ralph of Hot Springs, N.C., and Wendy Anne Shaw of McClellanville, S.C. She also leaves her grandchildren, Caleb Montgomery and wife Jessica of Stratham, N.H., Kirsten Montgomery and husband Dennis Walley of North Stonington, Noah Fellman of Stonington, Conn., Derek Banks, Jacob Worthington and wife Sandy, and Ryan Gundrum, all of Hot Springs; and great-grandchildren, Dylan, Courtlynd, and Vance Banks, Cameron, Ezra and Lucas Walley, Waylon and Autumn Worthington, and Anastasia Montgomery; as well as many dearly loved nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her sisters, Gloria Waugh Snapp and Millie Waugh Taylor; and a brother, J. Ronald Waugh.
