JoAnne “Jo” Wood Nichols, age 71, of Terre Haute, Ind., died at 10:33 p.m. April 11, 2012, in her home surrounded by her family.

Jo was a retired Special Education teacher at Chauncey Rose and Woodrow Wilson Middle Schools. Jo graduated from Oakland City University in 1963, and received her certification in Special Education in the area of moderate/severe disabilities from Indiana State University. In 1989, Jo completed her Master’s in Special Education which gave her a life license for her teaching career. Before teaching for VCSC, Jo worked at The Children’s Learning Center and was a teacher’s assistance at Crawford Elementary in Terre Haute.

Jo was born Sept. 14, 1940, in LaSalle, Ill., to Lawrence and Lucille Sobkowiak. Survivors include Jodie Sipes, husband Michael Sipes of Terre Haute, Juliann Wood and Tim Golden of Las Vegas, Nev., and Erica Black of Hanover, Ind.; one sister, Barbara Pirc of Meridian, Idaho; six grandchildren: Ryan Sipes, Emily Sipes, and Andrew Sipes, all of Terre Haute, Ind., lan Shapin, Kate Shapin and Marie Shapin, all of Las Vegas; and 16 nieces and nephews. Jo was preceded in her passing by her first husband, John Anthony Wood, of Oakland City, Ind., the father of Jodie Sipes and Juliann Wood, a younger sister, Diane Kordas of Loogootee, Ind.; and her parents, Lawrence and Lucille Sobkowiak.

Jo was a cancer survivor since 1996 and enjoyed gardening and keeping in touch with her three daughters and six grandchildren. Three grandchildren, Ryan, Emily, and Andrew Sipes, always helped G-ma keep her house going “green” as possible and updated. She also loved her talks on the phone to Ian, Kate and Marie. Thanks to all who shared her life. A very special thank you to all the nurses and people at Union Hospital and Hospice of the Wabash Valley.

There will be no services. Cremation will be administered by The Anatomical Education Program at Indiana University School of Medicine. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to made to Direct Donor Program, this can be reached at 317-274-7450 or to Lighthouse Mission. A gathering will be at her home, 2348 Idaho St. The open house will be from 12 noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, April 15, 2012, with Jodie and Juliann sharing in the celebration of their mom’s life with the releasing of balloons
