Vigo County Republican Party elects new officers

TERRE HAUTE — Randy Gentry will serve as the Vigo County Republican Party chairman while Vada Long will serve as vice chairman.

Chris Knew was elected secretary and Shirley Padgett was re-elected as treasurer.

Both Gentry and Long needed only to vote for themselves as both were unopposed for the top two spots in a party election Saturday staged at the Vigo County Public Library.

It was Gentry’s first full party election.

In September, Gentry was selected in a party caucus to replace former party chairman Bill Treadway who resigned after seven years at the helm of the county GOP. Gentry is employed by the State of Indiana as vice chairman of the State Parole Board. He is a 1990 graduate of Indiana State University.

Gentry said Saturday’s election was a mandated reorganization of the party, done statewide for all county parties, to elect officers for a four year term. The party election drew about 37 of nearly 90 precinct committee members for the election.

“I was thrilled with the turnout, especially as the chairman election was uncontested,” Gentry said. “Historically, that is a good turnout, as we don’t get a 100 percent turnout.”

Gentry said his top goal now “is to unify the party and provide a focus for everyone, to get everybody involved and let everybody name their part in what they want to do to help the party.”

“This is a perfect year to do that as there are no elections. Get everyone to come together and unify the party. The ultimate goal for me is to make sure we put up qualified candidates for election and do positive things for the community and provide new ideas,” he said.
