Man faces charges after being chased by police

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute man has been arrested after a vehicle pursuit and foot chase.

Robert Peoples, 38, appeared Monday in Vigo Superior Court 6 where Judge Michael Lewis found probable cause for his arrest on charges of criminal recklessness, habitual traffic violation, resisting arrest, possession of marijuana and two counts of escape.

Sgt. Doug Bensinger testified that a city police officer spotted a black 1994 Saturn parked behind the vacant Lone Star Steakhouse, and when the officer approached, the driver started the vehicle and drove away, police said.

After checking the license place on the car, the officer found out that its owner had an active criminal case. The car refused to stop as it was northbound on 13th Street, then struck a curb as the driver turned onto Washington Street. The driver jumped out and ran, but was quickly caught by the officer.

When the driver was identified as Peoples, police learned that he had two warrants for escape due to allegedly walking away from the community corrections program. A search of the vehicle revealed the marijuana, police said.

Peoples is to return to court Thursday for formalization of charges.
