Woods seniors spread holiday cheer

TERRE HAUTE — A holiday tradition continued Monday morning at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College when senior equine studies students mounted up on their decorated steeds to spread Christmas cheer through campus.

Starting at the horse stable on the north side of campus, several students, faculty, staff and SMWC President Dottie King rode along the streets of campus singing Christmas carols.

A few students and others who braved the chilly temperatures stepped outdoors to wave at the procession.

The students and their horses were decked out in their holiday best. Hillary Distler rode Pony, the largest horse in the stable, who sported a red Santa hat, a white beard hanging from his bridle, and a festive red blanket trimmed in white.

Senior Shelby Becker enjoyed a ride on Chance, who was interested in getting rid of his golden garland at the end of the ride.

Cloud was decorated with red and green garland and bells, ridden by Tracy Dykstra.

Garland, glitter and jingle bells adorned many of the noble horses as their hooves clip-clopped through campus. In a horse-drawn buggy, two students rode with a bucket of candy canes to pass out.

Back at the stable, the equine students concluded their ride through campus with a round of picture-taking, and then some exercise at the indoor obstacle course.
