Vigo County middle school volleyball teams have raised $3,025 to help fight breast cancer and increase awareness about the disease.
Representatives of the five Vigo County School Corp. middle schools presented the funds Monday to the Wabash Valley Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
The $3,025 is $700 more than the middle school volleyball teams raised last year.
“It’s heartwarming to see what these young girls are doing,” said Sally Roetker, president of the Wabash Valley affiliate board. “They’ve really embraced the cause.”
Adam Azar, West Vigo Middle School athletic director, organized the fundraising effort, something he has done for the past few years.
Breast cancer “affects of a lot of families in Terre Haute,” he said. The fundraising effort is a way to show support for those affected, and it also provides an opportunity for students to learn more about the disease.
Seventy-five percent of the money stays local, with part of the local money used for grants to assist uninsured and underinsured women.
The remaining 25 percent goes to the national Susan G. Komen for the Cure grants program to fund research to find a cure.
The donation is especially meaningful to Roetker, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 38.
Now 49, she had her second recurrence of the disease about one year ago and must remain in constant treatment to keep it in remission.
“Obviously, our affiliate is thrilled they have chosen to give the money to us,” Roetker said.
“The girls are learning what they need to know at a young age, and hopefully they will carry that with them throughout their lives,” paying attention to their bodies and living as healthy a lifestyle as possible, she said.
