Terre Haute Children’s Choir preparing for 20th annual Christmas Concert

TERRE HAUTE — Fans of Christmas music are invited to bask in the sound of youthful voices next week.

Members of the Terre Haute Children’s Choir practiced their repertoire Wednesday with just a week left before their 20th annual Christmas Concert in the Central Presbyterian Church at 125 N. Seventh St. The concert, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Dec. 5, will be followed by the group’s performance at the Indiana Theater on Dec. 7 as part of the Miracle on 7th Street event.

Jim Slutz, president of the group’s board of directors, said he’s been involved for nearly two decades and still enjoys the performances.

“Anybody that enjoys Christmas certainly enjoys children, which is part of the magic of Christmas,” he said. “And when they come out to a concert like this, they really enjoy it.”

Three choirs of children ages 6 to 15 make for an impressive sight, particularly considering their discipline and performance quality, he said.

Director Dan Tryon said this year’s performance will be special as it includes the participation of Sean Carey, a violinist and Indiana State University student. That accompaniment will be featured as part of composer John Rutter’s work, “Winter Dream.”

In addition to classical numbers, the group will also perform classics such as “Pat-A-Pan” and “Here Comes Santa Claus.”

“It’s a lot of fun working with kids who enjoy music,” said Tryon, who also serves as choir teacher at Honey Creek Middle School and an adjunct faculty member of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

Kristian Perisho has three of her own children performing this season, and members of her family have been singing with the choir for four years.

“The kids put a lot of hard work into this and really enjoy having an audience,” she said, encouraging people to attend the free concert.

All of the instructors do a great job with the kids, she said, noting the end product is both quality music instruction and an enjoyable performance.
