Effingham, Ill., driver killed in I-70 semi crash

Eastbound lanes fully reopen at at 6:30 p.m.

HENDRICKS COUNTY — One man was killed and another critically injured in a semitrailer accident that closed eastbound Interstate 70 in Hendricks County for several hours Tuesday.

The accident happened about 7:36 a.m. at the 57-mile marker near Monrovia.

The accident involved two semis, and one of the semi drivers, Arnold O. Rexroad, 64, of Effingham, Ill., was killed, according to Indiana State Police, which investigated.

According to police, Rexroad’s semi was disabled on the right shoulder and was about to be towed when it was hit from behind by an eastbound Freightliner semi pulling two trailers.

Rexroad and the wrecker operator, Joshua D. Sims, 30, of Cloverdale, were standing between their vehicles when the Freightliner’s second trailer jackknifed, striking the disabled semi from behind and pushing the semi forward into the wrecker.

Rexroad was pinned, while Sims was able to jump from between the vehicles.

The Hendricks County coroner pronounced Rexroad dead at the scene.

Sims suffered lower body injuries and was listed in critical condition Tuesday night at Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis. He is a wrecker operator for Curtis Wrecker Service in Hendricks County.

When the accident occurred, traffic was slowing down and moving over, police said. According to witness accounts, the Freightliner semi driven by Richard C. Maples, 60, of Wilmington, Ohio, was allegedly going faster than the other vehicles near the scene.

A news release indicated Maples also was injured, although the extent of his injuries was unknown Tuesday night.

The accident also involved a cargo spill that included wood-resurfacing material and other various non-hazardous cargo.

The eastbound lanes of I-70 were closed between Cloverdale and Indiana 39 for much of the day. Traffic was diverted from eastbound I-70 north onto U.S. 231 and U.S. 40.

The left lane re-opened around 4 p.m. and both lanes were re-opened by about 6:30 p.m.
