Clay police arrest two after meth lab discovery

CLAY COUNTY — Two people were arrested Monday afternoon after police received a report of noxious odors coming from a mobile home in west-central Clay County.

Jerry Wells, 34, Terre Haute, and Malena Shumaker, 29, Brazil, were arrested on suspicion of manufacturing methamphetamine, a class-B felony; maintaining a common nuisance and possession of methamphetamine, both of which are class-B felonies; and possession of paraphernalia, a class-A misdemeanor.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Department said deputies responded to a neighborhood where they detected a strong chemical odor emanating from a mobile home. When the occupants exited the home, after several requests by deputies, the officers noticed a “cloud of smoke” roll out the mobile home door. Inside, police said they discovered several items related to the manufacture, possession and ingestion of methamphetamine.

The meth lab was processed and handled by members of the Indiana State Police clandestine methamphetamine laboratory team. Assisting with the investigation were detectives from the sheriff’s department, officers from Brazil Police and ISP troopers.
