TERRE HAUTE —
Probable cause was found Thursday morning for the arrest of a Terre Haute man who discharged a firearm after reportedly finding a stranger in a bedroom of his home with his son’s girlfriend.
Patrick J. Porter, 56, appeared via video in Vigo Superior Court 1 where Judge John Roach set Porter’s bail at $10,000 with 10 percent allowed.
Porter’s next court date has been set for Tuesday.
Detective Sgt. John Childs stated in court that Porter discharged a .44-caliber handgun into the headboard of a bed Wednesday after coming home to find his son’s girlfriend and her friend together in the home. A toddler was also present in the home at the time.
The girlfriend was living at the home on Indiana 63 at the time of the incident. The judge learned in court that the girlfriend and her child are now living with relatives. Roach ordered that Porter have no contact with the girlfriend or her friend. A request by the deputy prosecutor to have all firearms in the home removed, however, was dismissed by the judge. Porter told the judge that he owns several rifles and shotguns.
