Riley man facing 4-year prison sentence

Warren E. Large pleads guilty to child molestation

TERRE HAUTE — A Riley man who has pleaded guilty to class-C felony child molestation faces a four-year prison sentence.

Through a plea agreement submitted Thursday in Vigo Superior Court 3, Warren Eugene Large, 61, would serve three years in the Indiana Department of Correction, with the remaining year suspended to formal probation. He must also have no contact with his victim, or any child younger than 16, and would be required to register as a sex offender.

Large had been set to go on trial Tuesday in Superior Court 3 for allegedly fondling or touching a child younger than age 14 in an attempt at sexual gratification during the time of June 4 to Aug. 14, 2010.

“I’m very sorry,” Large said to media as he was led from the courtroom to return to the Vigo County jail. Large, who is a retired Terre Haute city employee, did not have a criminal record.

Detective Rick Decker of the Terre Haute Police Department, who was lead investigator on the case, said the victim’s family agreed to the plea deal, especially since it keeps the young victim from having to testify in court.

Prosecutor Terry Modesitt pointed out that the charge is a class-C felony that carries a penalty of two to eight years in prison, and the presumptive sentence is four years.

“Looking at the sentencing statute, and looking at what he would have gotten if he went to trial, it was four years, and that was what he pled to,” Modesitt said.

The prosecutor pointed out that juries have convicted two defendants in recent high-profile molestation cases, and that factor is resulting in plea agreements that avoid the cost and victim stress of a trial.

“Recently, both Kevin Timko and Robert Posey were convicted at trial, and I think they [defendants awaiting trial] know that we will take them to trial,” Modesitt said.

Acceptance of the plea agreement and a sentencing hearing for Large are set for March 21 in Division 3 court.
