Vermillion County man arrested in domestic battery investigation

TERRE HAUTE — A Vermillion County man who police say attempted to force his way into a Terre Haute business Thursday morning has been arrested on a warrant stemming from an earlier Vigo County domestic battery investigation.

Charles E. Griffin III, 39, of Clinton, is being held in the Vigo County Jail on $15,000 bail after Indiana State Police spotted and arrested Griffin after a police radio broadcast about the incident on Wabash Avenue.

At 8:26 a.m. Thursday, Vigo County Central Dispatch transmitted an alert about Griffin because of an alleged violation of a protective order that had just occurred at a Terre Haute business. Griffin was suspected of trying to force his way into the business to contact a female acquaintance. Employees of the business dialed 911 for help.

Griffin reportedly left the scene in a gray 1990 Subaru before Terre Haute police arrived. His possible destination was reported as Vermillion County.

At 8:38 a.m., ISP Senior Trooper Ty Lightle, who was patrolling on Indiana 63 near Pennington Road in northern Vigo County, spotted the suspect vehicle northbound on that highway. The vehicle turned east onto Trinity Avenue and was stopped by Lightle at the intersection of Trinity Avenue and Hutchinson Street.

Griffin was taken into custody without incident on a Vigo County Division 4 warrant for domestic battery, invasion of privacy and criminal recklessness, all class-A misdemeanors. The warrant was for a previous domestic battery investigation and not related to the event Thursday morning.
