Truck driver in double fatal crash identified

TERRE HAUTE — A truck driver killed in a crash on Interstate 70 in Vigo County last Wednesday has been identified as Alfonso Ochoa Diaz, 60, River Rouge, Mich.

Vigo County Coroner Dr. Roland Kohr released that information Tuesday to the Indiana State Police.

A female passenger in the vehicle has not yet been identified, ISP said in a news release, “but the efforts to identify her are ongoing. Comparison samples have been difficult for the coroner’s office and ISP to locate.” Identifying the woman could take a few more days, police said.

Diaz died of blunt force trauma and perished before the tractor was consumed in fire, ISP said. Both Diaz and his passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.

Drug and alcohol tests are pending, ISP said.

The crash occurred at the 12-mile marker on the interstate, just east of the U.S. 40-Indiana 46 exit. The semitrailer Diaz was operating failed to slow and struck another semitrailer in the rear, subsequently catching fire, police said.
