Indiana State University Homecoming activities seemed pretty quiet this year from police officers’ point of view.
The unofficial student tradition dubbed “The Walk” generated little trouble, said officers involved in patrol.
Capt. John Moats of the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department said Sunday his officers found homecoming downright uneventful.
“Actually, we made no arrests. We just checked several people,” he said.
The annual trek down Wabash Avenue to Memorial Stadium is traditionally full of stops at the numerous taverns along the way. But Moats said overall participation in the Walk seemed lower than years past.
“You see a big presence of ISU Police and Terre Haute City Police also,” he said, explaining mass coverage helps deter bad behavior. Also, he credited ramped-up efforts on the part of the university, such as the Designated Walker Program, as helping.
Sgt. Richard Wallace at the Terre Haute City Police Department agreed that Saturday was uneventful.
“For us it was kind of quiet,” he said. “Some days it’s diamonds, and sometimes it’s coal.”
Indiana State Excise Police were reportedly in town for the weekend, but according to voice mail messages at their headquarters and departments, spokesmen would not be available until Tuesday because of the Columbus Day holiday.
Dispatchers at the ISU Police Department likewise said information about Saturday’s activities was not be available Sunday.
