Alleged pellet gun shooter faces two charges

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute man arrested Wednesday after allegedly firing a pellet gun at a passing vehicle in the McDonald’s parking lot at Third and Walnut streets appeared in Vigo Superior Court 6 on Thursday.

Derrick W. Wilson, 27, will return to court Tuesday for filing of formal charges. He was arrested on preliminary charges of criminal recklessness and attempted battery, and bail was set at $35,000 with no 10 percent allowed.

According to police, the alleged victim called 911 shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday to report that while passing a vehicle in the drive-through lane at McDonald’s, a male passenger in a four-door Ford reached out the window and fired a pellet gun in the victim’s direction. The incident prompted a major response from police units in the area.

Shortly after the 911 call, Indiana State University Police stopped a vehicle,  containing three occupants, that matched the description reported by the alleged victim at the intersection of Wabash Avenue and Fifth Street. The alleged victim gave a description of the gunman that matched the passenger in the car stopped by police.

Police report that a female passenger in the back seat of the car claimed that the pellet gun belonged to her, and she had given it to the passenger.

A license check of the driver revealed that he was driving while suspended. He was also cited for having an open alcoholic beverage container in the vehicle.

More than six police vehicles responded to the scene of the traffic stop, blocking eastbound traffic for almost an hour during the investigation.
