Tuesday stabbing incident under investigation
A reported stabbing in the 1500 block of Ohio Street on Tuesday remains under investigation, while the alleged victim remains hospitalized.
Terre Haute Police Assistant Chief Shawn Keen said police and the Vigo County Prosecutor’s Office are weighing the statements of the witnesses and participants to determine if any criminal charges will be filed in the incident.
Police are not releasing the names of the people involved in the incident. Keen said the alleged victim sustained multiple stab wounds.
The suspect in the incident was detained Tuesday evening, he said, but that person was later released after investigators discussed the case with the prosecutor’s office. Keen would not comment on the reason for the suspect’s release, because of the ongoing investigation.
Terre Haute, TREES Inc. plan 2nd mulching project
The City of Terre Haute is partnering with TREES Inc. to complete a second tree mulching project this year. All recently planted street trees will be mulched on South Fourth Street between Poplar and Hulman streets.
The City of Terre Haute and TREES Inc. split the cost of the mulch and TREES Inc. provides the volunteers. The City of Terre Haute’s urban forester handles the logistics of the project. The first project done this year was the mulching of trees along Ohio Boulevard, Blakely Avenue, and around the ISU’s Memorial Stadium.
The mulch will be placed beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday. Volunteers (anyone who wants to help can just show up) will meet at the intersection of Fourth Street and Deming Street at 8:30 a.m. There will be temporary lane closures on South Fourth Street during the project.
Vigo School Corp. Cookout for Charity is Friday
The annual Vigo County School Corp. Cookout for Charity will be conducted from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday in the parking lot of the administration building at 686 Wabash Ave.
The public is invited.
For $5, you will receive a Wendy’s hamburger or hotdog; macaroni and cheese or baked beans; a bag of chips and cookie. Employees of the administration building will be the hosts and cooks, with entertainment provided by the WTHI 99.9 FM radio van.
This year, the event includes a themed basket raffle. Fourteen schools have put together a wide variety of baskets and the public can purchase chances to win.
The organizations benefiting from the cookout will be The Shoe Bus and the Backpack Program.
Three candidate forums coming up in October
The League of Women Voters of Vigo County, the Vigo County Public Library and the Tribune-Star will be co-hosting three candidate forums at the Vigo County Public Library in October.
Candidates for Vigo County councilman-at-large will be featured from 7-8:30 p.m. Oct. 22.
Candidates for state representative in Districts 42, 43, 45 and 46 will be featured from 7-9 p.m. Oct. 23.
Candidates for Vigo County commissioner will be featured on from 7-8:30 p.m. Oct. 25.

Several streets to be closed for funeral, other events
The Terre Haute Department of Engineering has announced that several streets will be closed Friday in downtown Terre Haute for from 8 a.m. to noon for a funeral.
Among the streets that will be closed are: Fifth Street from the entrance to the UAP Eye Center to Walnut Street (leaving the entrance open) and Fifth Street from Walnut to Ohio streets (leaving the intersection open). Also, there will be no parking on Walnut Street from Fourth to Sixth streets at that time.
Other upcoming street closings include:
• Maple Avenue from 16th to 19th streets will be closed from through Monday for railroad crossing repair.
• Ninth Street from Elm to Tippecanoe streets and Elm Street from Ninth to 10th streets will be closed Monday though Oct. 8 for railroad crossing repair.
• Chestnut Street from Ninth Street and the alley east of Ninth will be closed Oct. 5 at noon through Oct. 7 at noon for ISU Homecoming events.
• The following streets will be closed on Oct. 5 from 11:59 p.m. until Oct. 6 at 1 p.m. for the ISU Homecoming Parade: Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, Eighth and Ninth streets from Wabash to Locust; Cherry Street from the alley (beside the State Building) to Fifth Street; Eighth Street from Larry Bird Avenue to Tippecanoe Street; Chestnut Street from Eighth Street to the CSX railroad crossing; Wabash Avenue from Fifth Street to Ninth Street.
• The alley behind 1367 Wabash Avenue will be closed on Oct. 6 from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. for ISU Homecoming activities.
• The eastbound lane of Wabash Avenue from 13th to 25th streets will be closed through Nov. 3 for road reconstruction.
• Cherry Street between Eighth and Ninth streets will be closed Oct. 12 from 6:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. for Annual ISU Women’s Basketball Block Party.
• 19th Street from Seventh to Eighth avenues will be closed on Oct. 31 from 4 p.m. until 10 p.m. for a Halloween Party.
Man accused of using brass knuckles in robbery
A man arrested after allegedly beating someone with brass knuckles faces a class-C felony charge of robbery.
Richie Allen Johnson, 26, of Terre Haute, appeared via video in Vigo Superior Court 6 on Wednesday where Judge Michael Lewis found probable cause for his arrest.
Detective Jeff Trotter of the Terre Haute Police Department stated that police responded Sept. 18 to a reported robbery at Dreiser Square where the alleged victim said he had been beaten by Johnson. Trotter said Johnson allegedly took more than $300 and prescription pain medication from the victim.
The victim was able to reach some golf clubs and began to strike Johnson with a club to get him to leave. Trotter said that Johnson later showed up at an area hospital with a fractured skull, cuts and bruises, claiming that he was attacked by unknown assailants.
The alleged victim identified Johnson during a photo lineup.
Trotter also told Lewis that Johnson has a pending criminal case in Division 3 court.
Lewis set Johnson’s bail at $75,000 cash only, and set an Oct. 1 court hearing in Division 3.
