State to maintain access on Indiana 42

Airport, other businesses won’t be affected by road construction

TERRE HAUTE — Access to Terre Haute International Airport, the Indiana Air National Guard base and homes and businesses on Indiana 42 will be maintained this summer during upcoming road construction, a state official said Thursday.

The Indiana Department of Transportation is widening and resurfacing Indiana 42 along a two-mile stretch from Indiana 46/U.S. 40 east to Chamberlain Street. The work is expected to create an approximately 75-day closure to through traffic on Indiana 42 beginning around May 1.

Access to the airport, the Guard base, homes and businesses on that portion of Indiana 42 will be maintained during the construction, said Debbie Calder, communication director for INDOT, Crawfordsville district.

“We’ll maintain access to all businesses, residents” and other destinations on that stretch of Indiana 42, Calder said Thursday.

The $6.9-million project includes adding new traffic lanes to Indiana 42 and improving the highway’s intersections at Hunt Road and Chamberlain Street, Calder told the Tribune-Star on Wednesday. The project will also improve the entrance to the airport, she noted.

More specific details will be provided closer to the actual road closure portion of the project, which is currently in the utility-relocation phase, Calder said.
