Vigo Library adds e-readers to its offerings

TERRE HAUTE — The Vigo County Public Library is set make its first big steps into the world of “e-readers.”

E-readers are small, hand-held electronic devices that display the pages of books.

Thanks to a federal Library Services and Technology Act grant of $9,000, the library has purchased 20 Kindle e-readers and 20 Nook e-readers that will be available for library patrons 18 and older to check out. The e-readers will contain up to 20 books that the library has in great demand.

Bonnie McNair, information systems and technology services manager at the VCPL, demonstrated the e-readers to the library’s Board of Directors Monday night. At this point, only books selected by the library staff will be available on e-readers, McNair told the board.

Kindle is the e-reader produced by Internet retail giant Amazon. The Nook is produced by retailer Barnes & Noble.

The e-readers will be available to library patrons by the end of the month, McNair said.

Also Monday, the library board approved the VCPL’s 2012 budget of $6.78 million. That’s a 2.9-percent increase from 2011, which reflects the maximum “growth quotient” permitted by state budgeting authorities, said Nancy Dowell, library director.

The board also heard news that the library has hired a new company to provide overdue and other notifications to library patrons. The new company, Unique Management Services Inc. of Jeffersonville, will offer telephone notification in addition to a lower rate for printed notices sent to patrons through the U.S. Mail.

The use of telephone notification will help drive down the cost of postage and printing involved in written notifications, Dowell told the board. The library has been spending at least 65 cents per printed notification. A telephone notification will cost the library just 15 cents, according to figures provided to the board.

Dowell also reported that First Financial Bank and the Wabash Valley Community Foundation are providing funding for the 2012 “Big Read,” which will focus on Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451.” First Financial provided $8,400 and the Community Foundation provided a grant for $5,000. Friends of the Vigo County Public Library also donated $3,500.
