100 Men Who Cook serve up fun

TERRE HAUTE — Aisles were tight Saturday night inside Hulman Center, as a sold-out crowd showed up to see “100 Men Who Cook.”

In point of fact, 102 celebrity chefs participated in the Terre Haute Children’s Museum’s third annual fundraiser, with the goal of netting $75,000 for the facility.

Lynn Hughes, executive director of the museum, said tickets for the event went quickly.

“We sold out weeks ago,” she said. With 85 tables of eight, plus 102 chefs each bringing a guest, as well as volunteers, nearly 900 people were on the arena floor Saturday. “It was cool this year because we did some online tipping,” she added, explaining that donors could go onto the Internet and support their chef of choice. “It got pretty competitive.”

In the past two years, the “100 Men Who Cook” event has raised more than $143,000 for the museum as participants dropped donations into the tip jars of their favorite chef. Each chef brings a specialty to the event.

Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology professor Charles Joenathan prepared Chicken Kiev for a return showing this year. “I changed the recipe a little bit to suit the audience,” he said. “Less spicy.”

Given the date’s proximity to St. Patrick’s Day, this year’s theme was “Going Green” and featured live auction items such as a Dixie Chopper lawn tractor, an emerald necklace and tickets to a Green Bay Packers game.

Terre Haute Fire Department Chief Jeff Fisher also came back for a second year, although he decided to substitute bacon-wrapped cocktail wieners for turkey and white bean chili.

“It’s supposed to be healthy,” the apron-clad Fisher said. “It’s my daughter’s recipe. She got it from a friend so I thought I’d give it a try this year.”

Don Schroeder, Old National Bank CEO and one of the festivities’ grand marshals, noted that the Wabash Valley Community Foundation will match the tips generated by chefs this year.

The event is being sponsored by Old National, Thompson Thrift, Time Warner Cable, Vectren and the Clara Fairbanks Foundation. In addition, special sponsors of the auction are Complete Outdoor Equipment and Wolfe’s Auto Auctions.
