One dead, one injured after motorcyclist flees police

PUTNAMVILLE — A Brazil man died and a Terre Haute woman was seriously injured in a motorcycle crash on U.S. 40 in Putnam County Tuesday night, after a police chase.

David L. Godsey, 28, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by Putnam County Chief Deputy Coroner David Brown, who preliminarily determined that Godsey died of blunt force trauma.

Passenger Jolene D. McCall, 25, was airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis with multiple life-threatening injuries. As of Wednesday afternoon, she remained in the neurocritical care unit in serious condition.

In a press release, Indiana State Police Putnamville District said Godsey apparently lost control of the cycle while fleeing Brazil and Clay County police on U.S. 40 near County Road 625 West in Putnam County.

Officers followed Godsey across the county line after attempting to stop a red 1996 Honda RF 3 motorcycle eastbound on Pinckley Street near Murphy Avenue for speeding 57 miles per hour in a 25-mph zone at 9:49 p.m.

The motorcycle continued eastbound at speeds near 100 mph and then turned north on County Road 200 East, continuing northbound to U.S. 40. The cycle turned eastbound on U.S. 40 with Clay County Sheriff’s deputies and Brazil Police units in pursuit, ISP said.

Speeds were around 100 mph as officers pursued the motorcycle into Putnam County.

About six minutes later, near Putnam County Road 625 West, the driver of the motorcycle lost control and traveled off the south side of the roadway, ending the 8.5-mile pursuit. The driver and passenger were thrown from the cycle, and both riders struck a wooden fence and drainage culvert. Neither rider was found wearing a helmet by medical personnel, although one helmet was found on the ground at the scene.

Toxicology results are pending. Godsey did not have a valid Indiana driver’s license.

The crash is under investigation by ISP Trooper Jonathan Cumbie. Assisting were the Putnam County and Clay County sheriff’s departments, Brazil and Cloverdale police departments, Putnam County Operation Life, Reelsville Fire/Rescue and AirEvac air ambulance.
