ISU’s seismic testing to shake up downtown

Weekend parking, traffic could be limited as ‘shaker trucks’ start search for oil

TERRE HAUTE — Parking will be limited along Wabash Avenue this weekend as oil exploration gets under way.

According to a media release issued by Indiana State University, seismic testing will begin today around the campus, requiring lane closures through Sunday. Large “shaker trucks” and other testing devices will be used as the school searches for oil downtown.

According to the release, testing will continue seven to nine days and streets affected include Wabash Avenue and Poplar, Chestnut and Tippecanoe streets between Third and 19th streets, as well as Fifth, Seventh, Eighth and Ninth streets between Tippecanoe and Oak streets. Testing along Wabash Avenue is scheduled for Saturday.

Street Commissioner Brad Miller said parking will be restricted along Wabash Avenue between Third and 14th streets throughout the daylight hours this weekend.

“This is the first testing they’ve done,” he said, adding parking along Wabash Avenue will return to normal Monday. Future test dates and times remain to be scheduled.

Robin Drummy, administrator of the Terre Haute City Board of Works, said the university was granted permission to utilize the city streets in its exploration for oil.

“All we’ve done is given them permission to use our city streets,” she said, explaining no special permits are required for the testing as ground is not being broken.

University spokesman Dave Taylor said work today won’t begin until late morning, meaning the to-work commute shouldn’t be affected by traffic delays. Trucks with vibrating equipment, or “shaker trucks,” will be used as contractors endeavor to locate underground pools, he said.

“I’ve been told you’ll hear it more than feel it,” he said, adding the group chose to work over the weekend due to lower traffic volume.
