Autopsy finds fatal shot in standoff not self-inflicted

Owensburg, Ind. — An autopsy on a Greene County gunman found dead after an exchange of gunfire with police has determined that the man died after being shot once in the chest, and that the fatal shot was not self-inflicted.

Greene County Coroner Sherri Wilson told the Tribune-Star that a bullet fragment was recovered Thursday during the autopsy of 25-year-old Michael Lane Jr.

A ballistics report on the fragment, as well as toxicology, is pending as part of the investigation by the Indiana State Police, Wilson said.

The two Greene County sheriff’s deputies wounded by gunfire have been released from a Bloomington hospital.

Deputies Jim O’Malley and Brad Deckard suffered non-life-threatening injuries in Wednesday morning’s shootout near Owensburg about 20 miles southwest of Bloomington.

Deckard was treated for a shoulder wound and released from IU Health Bloomington on Wednesday, while O’Malley, who suffered gunshot wounds to his lower legs, was released Thursday, according to Sgt. Curt Durnil of the Indiana State Police at Bloomington.

Lane was found dead Wednesday inside the home where he had barricaded himself, hours after he allegedly opened fire on officers.
