Vigo Democrats to announce caucus plans next week

Party must fill vacant surveyor post

TERRE HAUTE — The scheduling of a Democratic party caucus will be announced next week to replace Vigo County Surveyor Michael P. Sheehan, who died Saturday.

Under state law, Democratic Party Chairman Joseph Etling has 30 days to schedule a caucus to replace Sheehan. Etling must give notice to precinct committee members at least 10 days before a scheduled caucus.

“Out of respect to the family, I wanted time for the family to grieve and hold services and a funeral. Then we will take care of the business that needs to be taken care of,” Etling said Tuesday.

Sheehan, 58, was serving his fourth elected term as county survey. He first won election in 1998 and started in office in 1999. Sheehan was re-elected to the office in 2002, 2006 and 2010.

His current term expires Dec. 31, 2014.

Sheehan revitalized a stone perpetuation program which located, repaired or replaced more than 200 surveying section or corner stone markers in the county. In addition, Sheehan initiated an access cover project, using cast aluminum caps, to better preserve more than 1,700 points used to survey land throughout the county’s 408 square miles.

The access cover caps are most often found in the middle of county roads, marking a surveying spot. The cap can be removed to locate the surveying marker without damaging the road.

Visitation for Sheehan will be 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday from at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial is at Calvary Cemetery.
