Run for the Fallen preparations getting under way

TERRE HAUTE —

The memory of fallen warriors lives on as volunteers ready for another run.

Organizers of the annual Wabash Valley Run for the Fallen begin preparations this week, and those wishing to help are encouraged to participate.

This year, thousands of American flags bearing the names of those lost to wars in Afghanistan and Iraq will adorn the Veteran Memorial Trail at Indiana State University Memorial Stadium. Members of the community can walk or jog the trail, logging their distance as part of the project. Organizers hope to log one mile for each of the nearly 6,500 fallen warriors.

The flags will be up between Aug. 18 and 24, and organizers will begin assembling them with printed names Tuesday beginning at 6 p.m. inside The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1845 N. 61⁄2 St.

Large containers such as big buckets, tall boxes or plastic bins are needed to organize the flags. These containers can be picked up after the flags have been placed at the stadium. Single-hole punches are also needed.

Volunteers are also needed to help place flags in the ground around the stadium Wednesday beginning at 6 p.m. Participants are reminded that this year’s work will be quite difficult as the ground is dry and hard. Screwdrivers and hammers might be required.

Retrieval of the flags will begin at 6 p.m. Aug. 27.
