Suspect tracked, found by police canine unit

TERRE HAUTE — A West Terre Haute man faces multiple criminal charges after he was tracked and found by a Terre Haute Police canine unit.

Brandon Orman, 23, was arrested after more than an hour of searching early Friday by multiple police agencies.

Terre Haute Police Chief John Plasse told the Tribune-Star that city police were investigating some hit and run incidents that involved some construction barricades on 13th Street and a sideswiped pole in Twelve Points when they were notified of a reckless driver on Indiana 63 approaching Barnhart Road.

Plasse said that a correctional officer from the Vigo County Jail reported that he was driving north on Indiana 63 when a Ford Mustang sped past him and went off the road when the driver tried to turn onto Barnhart Road. The vehicle was damaged and could not be driven from the scene.

Plasse said that when the driver, later identified as Orman, saw the jail officer in his uniform, the driver fled on foot. The canine team of officer Justin Sears and Arie tracked Orman for more than an hour through muddy fields and woods.

“It took a while to get to him,” said Plasse, who was on the scene for the tracking. “But we set up a perimeter, and he couldn’t go anywhere.”

Agencies assisting in the search were West Terre Haute, Indiana State University, Indiana State Police and the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department.

“There really wasn’t a lot of places he could go,” Plasse said of the suspect. “There was good cooperation by everyone in the search.”

Orman was treated for dog bites following his apprehension. He was taken to the Vigo County Jail on charges of driving while intoxicated, battery on a police officer, resisting law enforcement and leaving the scene of a property damage accident.

Orman appeared in Vigo County Court 5 on Friday. He was released on bail after posting $10,000 with 10 percent allowed.
