The American Red Cross in the Wabash Valley weathered a tough first half of 2012 and still managed to reach its fundraising goal in its annual “Save the Day” campaign, launched earlier this year.
Ted Kraly, 2012 campaign chairman announced at the organization’s annual meeting Tuesday that the Red Cross raised more $60,400 since the campaign started near the first of the year. The goal was to raise $60,000.
“We did have to work a little longer and a little harder this year,” Kraly said Tuesday evening at the Wabash Valley Red Cross headquarters on South Third Street in Terre Haute. Adding to the difficulty of raising money this year, deadly tornados struck southern Indiana in March, shortly after the annual Save the Day campaign started, Kraly noted.
In March, the Wabash Valley Red Cross raised an additional $50,000 in a one-day push for southern Indiana tornado relief.
Money raised by the Red Cross is used for disaster relief, life-saving education, collection of blood and support for members of the military and their families.
In the past month, the Wabash Valley Red Cross has also come to the aid of victims of the fire at Garfield Towers, a Terre Haute Housing Authority property. That fire left more than two dozen families homeless, requiring Red Cross shelter, noted Carol Stevens, executive director of the local Red Cross. The organization also sent volunteers to both area hospitals to provide support for victims of that blaze, which claimed one life.
“People rely on us and it takes money to do the things we do,” Kraly said before the meeting. “The staff and the volunteers really have to be commended” for helping achieve this year’s fundraising goal.
The Save the Day campaign reaches out to individuals and companies, Kraly noted. Again this year, Jadcore Inc. of Terre Haute led off the campaign with a generous donation, he said.
The local Red Cross, which serves eight counties, also recognized board members and volunteers Tuesday night. Ginger Scott received the Board Service award, Judy Caveney and Betty Moote received the Disaster Services award. Janet and Richard Adkins shared the Heather Lynes Exceptional Service award and WTWO/WAWV and WTHI were recognized as Media Sponsors.
The annual Red Cross meeting was sponsored by Thompson Thrift.
