TERRE HAUTE —
Brandon Briley did his part to welcome Super Bowl visitors to Terre Haute.
On Monday, he and other volunteers assembled 1,000 hospitality bags that will be given to visitors who fly into Terre Haute or spend the night here.
The bags include a Terre Haute visitor’s guide, lip balm, hand sanitizer, a luggage tag and a commemorative Pepsi Super Bowl bottle. Today, they will be delivered to eight “Super Site” hotels and the Terre Haute International Airport.
“We are putting together bags for any visitors coming to Terre Haute for the Super Bowl,” said Ashley Delaunois, Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce marketing coordinator. The goal is to make people feel welcome and to market and promote Terre Haute.
Super Bowl fever is spreading.
“Businesses are excited,” Delaunois said. “The buzz is definitely starting.”
They anticipate Super Bowl fans could start arriving Wednesday.
The effort was spearheaded by a Terre Haute Super Bowl committee, which is using the theme “Touchdown in Terre Haute.”
The volunteers gathered at the Tribune-Star building on South Seventh Street and worked in a conference room and break room. Clients and employees of Mosaic, which serves those with disabilities, did much of the assembly.
The bags will go to Best Western, Comfort Suites, Fairfield Inn, Holiday Inn, Hilton Garden Inn, Springhill Suites, Drury Inn and the Holiday Inn Express.
Terre Haute hotels have guaranteed 1,000 rooms to the National Football League for their “NFL Experience” package for the Super Bowl weekend.
Some bags also will be taken to Terre Haute International Airport, which hopes to attract overflow air traffic that Indianapolis International Airport cannot accommodate.
Items in the bags have been donated by organizations and businesses and will be delivered today by the Tribune-Star.
“This is such an exciting time for Terre Haute to have the Super Bowl nearby in Indianapolis. It allows us to roll out the red carpet to people from all over the country that may be staying in Terre Haute,” said B.J. Riley, publisher of the Tribune-Star. “There has been a lot of hard work by the committee and volunteers to make sure that we make the best impression that we can and to make visitors feel welcome during their stay here.”
The visitor’s guide highlights Terre Haute attractions, including retail and food establishments. The Super Bowl XLVI Pepsi bottle is a limited edition.
Volunteers worked for about three hours Monday morning assembling the bags.
Mosaic volunteered “so that our clients get out in the community and get to know people” and also have some fun, said Chrystal Drake, direct support associate.
The Mosaic volunteers definitely have their favorite Super Bowl teams. “I like the Patriots,” Briley said. Volunteer and Mosaic client Jeff Morgan also said that the Patriots “are my favorite team.”
Mosaic volunteer Kimberly Dwigans is a big Colts fan, but since they aren’t in the Super Bowl this year, she’s favoring the team with the “other” Manning, Eli, and the Giants. “I’ll watch if he’s playing,” she said.
