Prosecutor: Terre Haute police shooting was justified

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute police officer will not face criminal charges in the June shooting death of Justin Compton, 26, of Seelyville.

Vigo County prosecutor Terry Modesitt announced Wednesday that “the actions of Terre Haute Police Officer Ryan Adamson were consistent with exercising self-defense to prevent serious bodily injury or death or to prevent the commission of a forcible felony.

“Therefore, no criminal charges will be filed against the officer for his response to the knife attack initiated by Justin Compton,” Modesitt said.

Vigo County police were attempting to serve an arrest warrant on Compton for his escape from custody on June 11, when he fled from authorities by running out of a courtroom and jumping from the second floor rotunda of the Vigo County Courthouse.

Police were advised that Compton stated he would not go back to prison as it was his fear that he would die in prison.

After being located at a residence in Seelyville, Compton fled and Adamson, a K-9 officer, responded to assist.

Compton was swinging a double bladed knife at Adamson and at his police dog when the June 27 shooting occurred in a wooden area just north of Seelyville, according to the prosecutor’s office.

In response to the attack, Adamson backed away while drawing his weapon and trying to get the police dog to disengage. As Compton continued to attack, Adamson fired four shots.

An autopsy from Vigo County Coroner Dr. Roland Kohr, a forensic pathologist, indicated all four shots struck Compton in the head and torso. A laboratory analysis from the Indiana State Police showed the four shots were fired from the officer’s weapon.

Modesitt’s review of the case included interviews of multiple law enforcement officers that were present at the time of the shooting, interviews given by persons close to Compton, review of police reports, an autopsy report and an Indiana State Police analysis of the bullets and gun used in the shooting.
