New warden takes over at prison complex

TERRE HAUTE — John F. Caraway assumed the duties as the Complex Warden at the Federal Correctional Complex, Terre Haute, on Monday.

Caraway, a native of Mississippi, replaced Charles L. Lockett, who transferred to the Federal Correctional Complex, Coleman, Fla.

Caraway started his Federal Bureau of Prisons career in 1992 as a correctional officer at the Federal Correctional Institution in Jesup, Ga.  Since then, he has held positions of increasing authority, including serving as a senior officer specialist and employee services specialist at Jesup; employee services manager at the Federal Prison Camp, Eglin Air Force Base and at Federal Correctional Institution, Danbury, Conn.; executive assistant at Federal Correctional Institution, Tallahassee, Fla.; associate warden at Federal Prison Camp, Duluth, Minn., and at the United States Penitentiary, Canaan, Pa.

He continued to seek positions of increasing responsibility, when in March 2008, Caraway was selected as the deputy assistant director of the Human Resource Management Division, in central office and was appointed to warden at Federal Correctional Institution, Cumberland, Md., in June 2010.

Caraway served in United States Air Force and holds a degree in aviation technology, an associate’s degree in liberal studies, a bachelor of science degree in history and a master’s degree in human resource management.

In 1996, he was the recipient of the Attorney General’s Award for Administrative Support for his recruitment of minorities and women in hard-to-fill positions, and new warden of the year in 2011.
